Washington County

Location & Access

Spread over 423 square miles on the eastern edge of the Metro MSP region, Washington County follows the flow of the scenic St. Croix River. It is considered a premier location for new, existing or expanding companies for four reasons:

Major Industries & Employers

Named for the first president of the United States, Washington County is associated with other big names these days – like Andersen Corporation, Hartford, 3M (Cottage Grove facility) and Imation. All four companies have operations in this prosperous Minnesota border county. Retail is exploding, fed by a rapidly expanding residential base of 228,103 people. Commercial, industrial and agricultural businesses are also strong.

Population & Workforce

Washington County is densely populated. As one of the smallest Minnesota counties in size, it’s fifth largest in population. It’s also one of the fastest growing. The county expects to reach 365,590 residents and double its employment base by 2030. (Metropolitan Council 2006)

The county follows the pace of economic expansion set by the Twin Cities. Most communities have developed economic bases supported by a skilled, white-collar labor force. More than 43% of the local workforce holds management or professional jobs. Another 26% works in sales or office positions. (2006 American Community Survey)

Transportation

Quality of Life

Nearly 470 lakes and wetlands, abundant woodlands, and two river valleys define the terrain. Historic sites and parklands are a source of local pride and regional interest.

While much of the county has retained its rural atmosphere, it is decidedly suburban in proximity and amenities. Each community boasts a unique character. Woodbury is celebrated for it distinctive, high-end neighborhoods. Historic Stillwater is the county seat. Interstate 94 is populated by handsome office and retail complexes. The communities around White Bear Lake, Forest Lake and the St. Croix and Mississippi rivers showcase lakeshore living at its best. Scandia and May township offer pastoral wooded settings just minutes from work.
